Zadar – Plitvice – Zagreb – Rijeka – Istra

In this short route you are going to explore ancient towns, UNESCO sites, capital city, culture, tasty wine and cuisine, history and two National parks. You will experience beautiful and not so crowded Croatia. Best for food lovers here.

Day 1

Zadar

Start your trip from our base – Zadar. Take a walk round old city, have a coffee in Kalelarga, the ancient Roman street, listen to Sea organ one of the greatest sights on the Adriatic coast, have a swim in the crystal-clear sea, eat fresh fish, drink local wine and enjoy the whole day in Zadar. Alfred Hitchcock said that Zadar has the best sunset in the world, so please don’t skip to enjoy that romantic moment! If you have time, visit nearby small city of Nin. After a day in city of Zadar you can stay in Camp Odmoree or Camp Planik with 10% discount.

Day 2

plitvice

Head north to Plitvice Lakes, oldest, largest, and most famous National Park in Croatia. We are sure you know about this National Park so we don’t have to give you any description, we can just say it simply amazing and unbelievable beautiful! During the peak season, this National Park is crowded be prepared to wait. Tip: Go to Plitvice Entrance 2 because there is way less tourists than Entrance 1. Near NP Plitvice you can visit the largest underground airport and military air base in the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (SFRY), and one of the largest in Europe – Željava. It is now abandoned but you can see the old Airplane Douglas and old airbase tunnels. Worth visiting to feel a bit of history. Visit Plitvice Holiday Resort to have a night with 10% discount.

Day 3

zagreb

Drive to Croatian capital Zagreb – a great place to escape from tourists and meet some locals. Walk around the old city, visit many museums (don’t skip Museum of Broken Relationships), admire beautiful buildings, churches and architecture and find out why it is an „Old city with a young soul“. There are many charming cafes, bars and restaurants.

Day 4

rijeka

Drive towards Rijeka. Make a stop in Fužine. Walk around beautiful Bajer lake, visit Vrelo cave and try some of the culinary specialties like frog legs and venison.

Spend half day exploring Rijeka and its unusual history, charming city center, war tunnels, old factories. Get the true local feeling without many tourist. If you have extra time, go visit Opatija. Find out here how to spend a day in Rijeka.  Rijeka is also a great jumping-off point for coastal island-hopping in the Kvarner Gulf – Krk, Cres, Rab and Lošinj. Day 5

pula

Continue towards Istria – largest peninsula in the Adriatic Sea ideal for food lovers. Please tray some of local delicacies like truffles, cheese, lamb and fish. Istria is famous for its wine so don’t forget to visit local wineries. Some of our suggestions are: Kozlović, Kabola, Meneghetti or Matošević.

First drive from Rijeka to Pula (107km) and enjoy beautiful coastal road. On the way you can make few stops in charmful old villages or find a hidden beach and take a swim. Park your campervan i one of many parking lots and take a short boat ride to National Park Brijuni – once private summer residence for famous president of Yugoslavia, Josip Broz Tito. Experience untouched nature, safari, rich culture and history of this islands. No cars allowed on island, but you can rent a golf car and drive around island, it is very fun.

Spend your evening in Pula and explore its three thousand year old history, where every step you take through the old town is a landmark, starts and finishes with the Roman amphitheater. During the months of July and August the amphitheater holds a series of concert and the atmosphere is just magical.

Day 6

Rovinj

In the morning, head to picturesque city of Rovinj. Don’t be surprised if you hear more Italian than Croatian language. The official language is Croatian but Italian is common as well due to the long historical influence. This charming city can be effortlessly walked over, which means you can explore the sights completely with no rush.

In the afternoon, go to nearby Lim valley – the 35 km long valley of the river Pazinčica, which transforms into the Lim Channel a 10 kilometers long estuary. Enjoy fresh seafood with a view.

In the evening, drive to ancient Roman town – Poreč. Walk around the old town and visit the Euphrasian Basilica which is protected by the UNESCO in 1997. Sleep in one of many camps in Porec or go to our partners campsite Vita Mia Camping to have 10% discount.

Day 7

Motovun

If you like Aquaparks, you can choose one of two parks near Poreč and spend a half day there or continue your trip to Motovun, the pearl of inland in Istria. Every summer, since 1999, Motovun has been the host of a famous film festival so try to be there at that time, it is really fun.

Enjoy Istrian roads with the most stunning views and make sure to stop at a local konoba for lunch and sampling truffles, wine and olive oil. After exploring Motovun, continue to smallest town in the world, Hum. It is situated in the center of Istria region, near the town of Buzet, know as a “town of truffles”. You can sleep in Motovun Camping for discounted price.

Day 8

Drive back to Zadar. Experience one of Europe’s most beautiful roads – Jadranska Magistrala or Adriatic Highway. You will be rewarded with a wonderful scenery of the Adriatic Sea and islands during the whole trip. Jadranska Magistrala is running all the way to Dubrovnik! Normally you need 4 hours to get to Zadar but take it easy, enjoy your Croatia campervan trip and make many stops. There are plenty of amazing viewpoints along the road. Some of most interesting stops along the way are Senj, Zavratnica Bay, NP Paklenica, Zrmanja river and viewpoint Pariževačka glavica.
