Tuscany had always been a dream, but this time, we were experiencing it differently—traveling in a campervan with our 7 month old baby. Some might call it a challenge, but for us, it was a perfect blend of adventure, slow travel, and unforgettable moments. With stunning landscapes, delicious food, and the freedom to change plans on a whim, this trip proved that Tuscany is best explored at your own pace—especially with a little one in tow.
We chose October for our adventure, and we couldn’t have made a better decision. The weather was perfect—not too hot, not too cold—plus, the crowds were smaller, making every place feel more intimate. And the autumn colors? Absolutely breathtaking!
Use our itinerary as a inspiration for your next campervan trip!
Day 1: The Journey Begins – Coffee in Portogruaro & Sleeping in Lucca
Our adventure kicked off with a coffee break in Portogruaro, a charming town with picturesque canals and bridges. While our baby napped, we enjoyed a quiet moment with espresso and croissant in hands, gearing up for the road ahead.
By evening, we arrived in Lucca, a walled city with a peaceful atmosphere. We strolled along the historic walls, wandered through the quaint streets, and let our little one explore Piazza dell’Anfiteatro. Before settling in for the night, we indulged in the most delicious ravioli we’ve ever tasted.
Day 2: Morning in Lucca, Afternoon in Pisa & A Home-Cooked Feast
We spent the morning soaking up Lucca’s charm, taking it slow and stopping for pastries at a local café.
By afternoon, we made our way to Pisa. Of course, we couldn’t resist the classic Leaning Tower photos, but we also enjoyed exploring the quieter backstreets. Our baby was fascinated by the pigeons in Piazza dei Miracoli, and we took turns admiring the Cathedral and Baptistery.
That evening, we parked at Camp Le Selvole, where we were treated to a traditional homemade dinner. Sitting under the Tuscan sky, enjoying rustic Italian dishes, we felt completely at home.
Day 3: San Gimignano & the Best Campsite View Ever
In the morning, we headed to San Gimignano, the famous medieval town known for its towers. We strolled through the cobbled streets, treated ourselves to what’s been called “the best gelato in the world,” and took in breathtaking panoramic views.
That night, we camped at Podere Il Casale, and wow—what a view! Nestled in the heart of Val d’Orcia, this was hands-down the most scenic campsite we had ever stayed at. As the sun set over rolling hills, we felt like we were in a dream.
Day 4: Pienza, Montepulciano & Wine Under the Stars
The morning was spent exploring Pienza, a picture-perfect Renaissance town famous for its pecorino cheese. The streets were peaceful, and we found plenty of open spaces where our baby could stretch and play.
In the afternoon, we drove to Montepulciano, another stunning hilltop town. We wandered through wine cellars, admired the architecture, and indulged in yet another delicious pasta and tiramisu.
That night, we returned to Podere Il Casale and, once the baby was asleep, we poured ourselves a glass of local wine. Sitting outside, wrapped in the warmth of Tuscany’s night air, we couldn’t have imagined a better way to end the day.
Day 5: Wine & Lunch in Chianti
Our journey continued through Castelnuovo Berardenga, before stopping in Radda in Chianti for a relaxed wine tasting and a long, delicious lunch. Chianti’s rolling vineyards and charming villages made for the perfect mid-trip pause.
Day 6: A Rainy Change of Plans & A Wine Tasting Surprise
Originally, we had planned more countryside stops, but rain changed our minds. And that’s the beauty of traveling in a campervan—plans can shift with ease. Instead, we drove to Florence, embracing a day of city exploration.
By the afternoon, the skies cleared just in time for a wine tasting at Castello di Verrazzano. Sipping incredible wines in a historic castle was a highlight of the trip—an experience that felt both luxurious and authentic.
Day 7: Volterra – A Town of Mystery & Charm
Our final full day was spent in Volterra, a lesser-known but equally enchanting Tuscan town, one of our favorites. The mix of medieval and Etruscan history made for a fascinating day, and we loved wandering through its quiet streets and hidden alleyways.
Day 8: The Slow Journey Home
With hearts (and stomachs) full, we started our journey back home, taking in the last views of Tuscany’s winding roads and golden fields.
This campervan adventure through Tuscany gave us the best of everything—breathtaking scenery, incredible food, and the flexibility to travel at our own rhythm. Driving through scenic roads while our baby napped, sharing wine under the stars, and enjoying the simple pleasures of Italian life made this a trip we’ll cherish forever.
