If you’re dreaming of crystal-clear rivers, quiet mountain mornings, campfire dinners, and the freedom of spontaneous campervan living — this one’s for you.
This April, we packed up our campervans (Queen & John), our one-year-old baby Oskar, and hit the road with friends for a 4-day road trip through Slovenia. It was wild, beautiful, a bit unpredictable (hello parent life!), and completely unforgettable.
Here’s our full route, day-by-day highlights, and tips you can use to plan your own campervan adventure in Slovenia.
Bonus tip: Slovenia is the perfect add-on to your Croatian trip — especially by campervan. It’s just a short drive from Istria or Kvarner, and within hours, you’ll find yourself in alpine valleys, riverside campsites, and peaceful forest trails.

When to Go?
We traveled in early April — spring was just waking up, trails were quiet, and the air was fresh and cool. Crowds? Non-existent. Nights were still chilly, but both Queen & John are equipped with great heating, so we stayed warm and cozy inside.
Tip: Bring layers and warm pajamas if traveling in early spring. That fresh mountain air is no joke at night!
Our 4-Day Route:
Day 1 – Postojna Cave & Kobarid Views
We left Rijeka (Croatia) early and headed straight to one of Slovenia’s best-known spots — Postojna Cave. The underground train ride through stunning rock formations was a hit with all of us, including Oskar (who loved the lights and movement).
Tip: A great stop for families — fast, fun, and stroller-friendly.
That night, we parked near Kobarid at a quiet Camp4night spot with jaw-dropping views of the Julian Alps.
Tip: Camp4night is a must-have app for off-grid campervan travelers.

Day 2 – Tolmin Gorge & Camp Koren
Our morning started with a walk through Tolmin Gorge — crystal-clear turquoise water and dramatic canyon walls made for a magical start to the day. The short trail is easy and kid-friendly. Bonus: Pre-season entrance fee is just €8.
That evening, we camped at Camp Koren, right on the Soča River. It felt like we had the entire place to ourselves.
We grilled dinner, made a campfire, and swapped stories under the stars.
Tip: Traveling off-season means fewer crowds, more nature, and total peace.

Day 3 – Great Soča Gorge & Kozjak Waterfall
This was one of our favorite days. We walked the Great Soča Gorge trail, then had lunch by the river while Oskar napped in the van — a perfect, peaceful moment.
Our van kitchen came in handy: we made simple meals like pasta with pesto and tomatoes, or creamy mushroom gnocchi. Nothing fancy, but they tasted 5-star with that view.
Tip: Use fresh local ingredients and keep camper meals simple — it’s all about the vibe.
Later that day, we hiked to Kozjak Waterfall, a fairytale spot just a short walk from Camp Koren. Easy, stunning, and unforgettable.

Day 4 – Scenic Drive to Camp Kraljev Hrib
We drove through Bovec toward Kamniška Bistrica — and wow. Alpine peaks, rivers, valleys… the kind of drive that makes you want to stop every five minutes for photos.
We stayed at Camp Kraljev Hrib, a peaceful campsite nestled between a forest and a river. It’s located right next to the cable car for Velika Planina, so you can roll out of bed and straight into the mountains.
The campsite also has a cozy restaurant serving local Slovenian specialties — perfect after a long day outdoors.

The Unexpected Twist
Our plan was to hike Velika Planina the next morning… but in true family travel fashion, Oskar got sick and we had to cut the trip short.
What was supposed to be a 7-day adventure turned into 4 — but that’s life with a little one. Flexibility is part of the magic.
We came back a few weeks later to visit Velika Planina and Logarska Dolina on a separate trip.

Would We Do It Again?
Absolutely.
Slovenia is a dream for campervan travel — safe, scenic, full of natural wonders and peaceful camping spots.
Whether you’re traveling as a couple, with friends, or as a family, it’s a destination that lets you slow down, breathe deep, and enjoy the simple moments.
Already have a plan for exploring Croatia? Slovenia is just around the corner and easy to explore in a few extra days — especially if you’re renting a campervan with us from Rijeka or Zagreb. It’s the perfect way to extend your journey into the mountains, rivers, and hidden gems just over the border.
